Cosmetic Dentistry - Change your smile

At The Dental Surgery we fully appreciate the importance of a healthy and attractive smile. We understand how the appearance of your teeth can greatly affect the way you feel about yourself. A nice smile can open doors and knock down barriers that stand between you and a fuller, richer life. If you are not completely happy with your smile we can transform it for you. We will listen sympathetically to your concerns and advise you on the best way to achieve your desired result.

Veneers

A veneer is a very fine facing of porcelain made by the dental technician in the laboratory which is bonded onto your natural tooth. The primary function is to improve the appearance and they can involve very little preparation of your own natural tooth.

Veneers can be used in cases where the teeth are chipped, discoloured or crowded. They can produce excellent aesthetic results. They are most frequently used on your upper or lower front teeth. In the more complicated aesthetic cases, treatment planning is the key. We construct a wax mock up of the case on study models, so that you can see the shape of your new teeth prior to undergoing treatment. We are then able to assess the appearance of the teeth before the final restorations are constructed and cemented.

Crowns

A crown or 'cap' completely covers a weak tooth above the gum line. Their function is to restore each tooth to its normal shape and size, while protecting and strengthening the tooth and enhancing the aesthetics. Crowns are made of porcelain, precious metal, or porcelain with metal inside for strength. Chipped or fractured teeth, broken down fillings, teeth that are malformed, malpositioned or discoloured; any and all of these conditions can affect your smile. Fortunately, a crown can easily restore your appearance.

Tooth whitening

Like hair and skin, teeth vary in colour. Some are yellower or darker then others, even when they are quite healthy. Teeth tend to get darker as people get older. Whitening your smile is one of the least expensive and least invasive ways of enhancing your appearance.

Techniques for whitening teeth:

1. Whitening toothpastes

These do not affect the natural colour of the teeth, they are effective in removing stains, therefore improving the overall appearance. They are also useful as part of a maintenance program if you have previously had your teeth professionally whitened.

2. Tooth Bleaching

Tooth colour can be very effectively lightened with specialist dental products containing hydrogen peroxide (bleach). Tooth bleaching is completely safe; it improves the appearance without removing any of the natural tooth substance. NOTE: We strongly advise against shop bought products as they only contain a small percentage of hydrogen peroxide and therefore are not an effective way to whiten teeth.
