How To Design A Wedding Playlist

We have been sent exclusive wonderful advice by award-winning Mighty Fine Entertainment, a leading DJ hire and mobile disco provider.

A wedding is a wonderful and rare opportunity to bring together every generation of a family for a good knees up. How often do you go out partying with your Nan? When did you last get upstaged on the dance floor by a three-year old? While togetherness can only be a good thing, such an eclectic mix of tastes, eras and expectations can also be tricky to manage, and it’s your wedding DJ’s job to keep everyone happy without killing anyone’s buzz.

Thankfully, a good wedding DJ will be armed with a wealth of experience and ideas. Expert DJ, Mark of Mighty Fine Entertainment has let us in on the following tips and tricks to keep everyone entertained, no matter what their age:

Warm up the crowd

A good general rule to follow is to ask your DJ to warm up earlier in the evening with some classics for the older generation who may get tired or have plans to leave before the night is over. For those charismatic older folk with energy that would put most twenty year olds to shame, putting on music they’re likely to love will get them in the mood to dance the night away even if the more up-to-date music isn’t quite their thing later on.

Bridge the generational gap with some clever choices

There are some songs that bridge the generational gap and make perfect additions to a wedding playlist. For example, recent covers or remixes of older songs can be very popular at weddings, the revival having introduced them to a new generation where some guests will be remembering the songs from the first time around. Motown and soul standards are also multi-generational godsend, so playing them to transition from one vibe into another can be really useful. Other acts that never seem to go out of fashion include The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Kinks and The Beach Boys, amongst others.

Don’t be obscure too early on

The hottest new thing that nobody’s heard of is unlikely to get everyone up on their feet. While, as the bride and groom, your music tastes are important, if you’re die-hard musos, embrace that, but don’t make it the sole focus of the playlist. Ask the DJ to balance your favourite tunes with music that people will at least recognise, even if it isn’t their cup of tea. Your personal choices are key to creating the right vibe for your big day, and they shouldn’t be ignored, but your DJ should have the expertise to build the mood to a peak and play your favourite songs at the right time.

Don’t underestimate the power of a good sing along

Ask your DJ to end the evening on a high note – or lots of high notes, sung loudly, potentially horribly out of tune, without inhibitions by an ecstatic crowd of your nearest and dearest. Those classic anthems that you can’t help singing along to really bring everyone together and finish off the party with a bang, so bring it back to basics for the last few tracks. Think carefully about what you want your wedding anthem to be and make that the last song, because that’s what everyone will remember.
