Bridal Beauty Advice From bareMinerals

Sarah-Jane Froom, also known as SJ, joined bareMinerals in 2006 and is now the brand’s International Make-Up Artist. This role sees her travel the world on international press events, editorial photo shoots, television presenting and working on campaigns. Throughout her career, SJ has worked with celebrities such as Naomi Campbell, Sadie Frost, Jemma Kidd and Alexa Chung.

5 Star Weddings: What beauty advice do you have for brides on their wedding day?

SJ: If you are using a make-up artist, tear out any inspiration for them and organise a trial before the wedding. Consider whether you will be wearing fake tan on the big day as you should have this on during the trial too for a true reflection. I also recommend waterproof mascara for the bride, bridesmaids and mother of the bride as it can be an emotional day! I always use the bareMinerals Locked & Coated Waterproof Lash Topcoat (£12) as it creates an invisible, protective veil over lashes.

5 Star Weddings: How many make-up artist trials would you recommend?

SJ: One is enough if you are happy with the outcome! You might want another if you have changed hair colour or if you develop specific skin concerns.

5 Star Weddings: How would you recommend finding a good make-up artist?

SJ: Word of mouth is so important so ask friends, family and social media for any recommendations. I also recommend looking at bridal blogs and wedding websites to get ideas from other brides. If you know that you like a particular beauty brand, you could always email around to find out what the make-up artists use in their kit. For example, many brides like to use bareMinerals as the mineral based products are designed to be healthy for the skin and leave a glowing, natural finish.

5 Star Weddings: What are your tips for keeping make-up looking good all day without the need to reapply?

SJ: Using a good primer is so essential for helping make-up stay put. I love the bareMinerals Brightening Foundation Primer (£21) as it helps to combat dry patches, fine lines, excess oil and large pores, whilst also leaving skin looking brighter and more even. Throughout the day you can also pat down any oily areas with a mattifying powder, such as the bareMinerals bareSkin Perfecting Veil (£22).

5 Star Weddings: Do you have any tips on how to make lipstick stay on throughout the day?

SJ: My technique is to prime lips with foundation first to act as a base, then apply lip liner for perfectly defined lips, before blending with a cotton budge to soften the edges.

I then apply the lip colour with a brush, blot with a tissue and apply the bareMinerals Mineral Veil (£20) over lips whilst the tissue is still on. Mineral Veil is a soft finishing powder that locks make-up in place and leaves an airbrushed finish.

Remember, eating and drinking can dislodge lipstick so lips may need topping up after the wedding breakfast.

Sultry bridal look

5 Star Weddings: What is the best way of finding the right shade of foundation?

SJ: I would recommend getting shade matched at a counter. bareMinerals counters offer complimentary makeunders so that all brides can find the correct shade and style of foundation for their skin as well as learn how to create their own bridal look themselves. This is ideal if you are not having a make-up artist at your wedding.

5 Star Weddings: Have you noticed any emerging bridal trends?

SJ: Most brides prefer a natural look on their wedding day, with clear, fresh, soft-focus skin. This was a big trend on the SS15 catwalks like Marc Jacobs and Christopher Kane. The key to the SS15 trend is creating dewiness both in the centre of the face and along the cheekbones whilst keeping the rest of the face matt.

Start with a brightening foundation and then buff a loose mattifying powder on the chin, around the corners of the nose and on centre of forehead. Finish by highlighting highs of cheekbones, the centre of the nose and the bow of the lip for extra illumination. I like to use the bareMinerals Well Rested Face and Eye Brightener (£22), an easy-to-use pen with pearlescent, light-reflecting minerals.

5 Star Weddings: How can a bride update her daytime look for the evening?

SJ: The easiest way is to create a bolder eye or lip look. A smoky eye is a classic, timeless look and can be easily achieved by applying a deep Eyeshadow across the crease of the eyelid and in the outer corners of the eye. For winter weddings, running a sparkly gold across the lash line also looks really effective.
