Pasikudah in the Eastern Province of Sri Lanka was once a popular tourism destination but in 1983, due to the civil war, the area became off-limits. Now, almost 30 years later with the civil war well and truly over and the completion of Tsunami rehabilitation projects, this small coastal resort is gearing up to receive an influx of visitors.

With one of the longest stretches of shallow coastline in the world, Pasikudah Bay is ideal for swimming and water sports especially as the current is relatively weak compared to the rest of Sri Lanka’s coasts. A dive highlight includes the sunken HMS Hermes, a WWII casualty, which has put this area of Sri Lanka on the map as one of the world’s greatest wreck dives. In addition to exploring the local towns, this area is ideal for day trips to the ancient ruins of Polonnaruwa, UNESCO heritage site of Sigiriya and a safari in Minneriya National Park and Habarana.
